Fun Dinner Party Conversation Starters

I recently heard this joke on a podcast that had my husband and me keeling over in laughter:

“With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world, it’s worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote ‘The Hokey Pokey,’ died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.”

Starting your dinner party or gathering with a joke like this is can immediately lighten the mood. It creates an instant sense of silliness and who knows? One of your guests might have an even better joke up their sleeve for you to use the next time.

Have Guests Guess What You Do

One thing that kills conversation fast is the inevitable, “So, what do you do?” It’s awkward, makes people feel like they’re being judged, and definitely doesn’t lift the mood.

If you want a fun dinner party conversation starters, here’s my advice: stay clear of work topics. Or, if you must talk about work, make it a game.

A few years ago, my husband and I hosted a cocktail party with neighbors after moving into a new apartment. Before this get together, the longest conversations we’d exchanged with one another weren’t longer than a minute or two.

At the beginning of the party with our neighbors, we asked everyone to keep what they did for a living, a “secret.” That meant no bringing up anything to do with work. I thought it would be a fun experiment to see what people thought about our professions and guess the others, too.

After an hour or so of getting to know each other, we went around and asked everyone to go around the room and guess and explain a little.

One of our neighbors guessed that my husband was “a CEO or entrepreneur for a media company who takes a lot of important phone calls.” When my husband explained that all of the talking in the backyard was really just him, talking to his computer, taking multiple retakes for his YouTube videos, we all had a good laugh.

Reminisce for Immediate Laughter

Another reliable fun dinner party conversation starter that I like to bring up at parties is reminiscing about the past.

For example, ask your guests about their most embarrassing fashion or style failures.

I love sharing the story of how I used to over-pluck my eyebrows in high school (to near extinction) until my mom told me she’d shave them off in my sleep if I didn’t stop.

There’s bound do be something that happened in your youth (to either yourself or someone you know) that’s worth bringing up.

Play a Game For Unexpected Fun

When conversation slows, introduce a little structure by playing “Would you rather.” It’s a perfect fun dinner party conversation starter for lulls, and it reveals a lot about your guests’ preferences in an entertaining way.

It might be a bit awkward when you first introduce the game but people will warm up to the idea once you get going.

For instance, I once asked, “Would you rather lose your sense of smell and taste or your sight?” The debate became surprisingly animated when one guest said they would rather lose their sense of color sight than give up coffee completely which we all found shocking.

Share a Ridiculous Story

One of my favorite personal stories to tell at parties (and a go-to fun dinner party conversation starter) is from the COVID lockdown in South Africa when I joined Bumble to find wine, not love.

With my husband’s approval, I matched with someone who hand delivered a case of wine to our doorstep the next day. Don’t worry, we paid.

Sharing this wild story at a gathering immediately gets everyone laughing and sharing their own crazy experiences from the pandemic or just something ridiculous they’ve done during desperate times.

Ask Playful, Random Questions

When you need to reignite the conversation, try posing playful questions that spark debate and laughter.

For example, ask your guests, “What’s the weirdest thing you’ve Googled lately?” or throw out a game like “For it or against it?” where everyone chimes in with opinions on random topics like velvet, cold pizza, or foot massages.

These quirky questions serve as great icebreakers and often lead to surprisingly opinionated (and hilarious) discussions. It’s a simple way to get everyone involved without putting anyone on the spot, and you’ll discover fun quirks and preferences you never knew people had. Plus, debates over trivial things can carry the conversation into unexpected, fun territory—ideal for keeping the vibe light and energetic.
